A2 Comic Strip Soap

After picking a comic strip to film and edit into a snippet of a soap, I changed the dialogue to make it more relevant to the conventions of a soap opera.
Using a video camera and a tripod to reduce shake and make the video as smooth as possible, I incorporated as many camera shots and angles as possible; such as a crash zoom and various pans. If i were to do this task again I would think carefully about using more camera movements and camera shots, but this was difficult as I filmed the comic on the computer screen. Also the camera was on a slight angle while filming, it would have been an improvement if I had noticed and changed this before filming.
As I have only ever used Windows Movie Maker before, I found it difficult to use Adobe Premiere Elements 8 but after practising and testing on the program, I eventually became familar with its tools and was able to include effects in postproduction such as: the title card banner reading "Previously on..." and the shake effect at the end to emphasise the significance of the cliffhanger.
I also added non diegetic background music to the beginning of the video making sure it was upbeat and positive. The name of the soap "The Suburbs" connotes a happy, ideal lifestyle; which is reflected by the music I chose. I recorded the dialogue in a different room to which I filmed the comic strip to get the best possible results. I then added the dialogue to video and removed the video, so only the audio would be added.

Skins Trailer

For inspiration on my final media coursework piece, I looked at soaps/tv dramas that I was aware of and that were mainly aimed at a slightly younger audience than me. This was so I could relate to the story lines and easily recreate and advance on some of these ideas. In this Skins trailer I think the slow motion is extremely effective as it allows the viewer to connect with the characters emotions and "feel" the way that they do.
The editing and cuts used is something I would like to include in my soap trailer as the turn from happy emotions to angry/upset emotions is distinct through these techniques and often conflict is a common theme in soap operas.
The feathered edges of some of the scene represents a flashback, and this is also something I will consider when creating my soap trailer. Also no dialogue is heard for the first part of the trailer where everyone in the scenes seems to be having a good time, the long shot of the firework conveys the turn of events where the emotions change and a fight breaks out. At this stage dialogue can be heard as the volume of the non diegetic music backing the trailer is lowered yet the tempo is quicker. The cuts at this stage are fast to portray exactly what's happening in the scene - violence.

Hollyoaks 2009 Trailer

This trailer from Hollyoaks conveys the conventions used in many soap operas. It is stated in the trailer that there are 4 storylines within the episode, this is because of the large number of main characters within soap operas as the characters are meant to be percieved as realistic to life as possible.
The camera shots used are simple but effective, over the shoulder shots and big close ups are common shots used in soap operas. At the very end of the trailer a close up/crash zoom is used to emphasise the womans facial expression and shock at something she has seen, this draws the audience in and creates intimacy. A fast cut is used to the end title which creates a cliffhanger which many soap opera episodes end with to create tension and apprehension.
In the first scene characters can be seen running across a beach, which is a geniune beach which helps to create realism within the episode, outdoor locations are also used and sets used for indoor scenes.  Towards the end of the trailer the text "and a twist you won't see coming" is embedded between fast cuts of the characters which conveys urgency and conflict between the two female characters.
